Wānaka Rock Climbing

Wānaka rock climbing offers one of the South Island’s main rock climbing destinations. Hospital Flat, an area that boasts thousands of established rock climbs throughout the grade range, is just 20 minutes drive from Wānaka town centre. Set in the beautiful idyllic setting of the Matukituki Valley, the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park.

Wānaka Rock

Wanaka Rock Climbing [] Wanaka Mountain Guides

Most Wānaka rock climbs are single-pitch sport climbs protected by fixed bolts, but there are also some multi-pitch and traditionally protected climbs.

The venue provides the opportunity to develop further technical rope skills or techniques and strategies to attempt harder climbs. Whether you are focused on developing your own skills or getting shown around the best spots by a local guide.

We also offer a range of rock climbing courses covering sport climbing, traditionally protected climbing, multi-pitch climbing, alpine rock climbing, and rock rescue.

Itinerary

Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation at 8:30. In the summer we will seek out the shade (usually with a cooling dip in the Motutapu River or Lake Wānaka during the day). At the end of the day, you will return to Wānaka.

During winter, when the days are shorter and colder, we do half days starting at 9:30 to climb during the middle of the day in the warming winter sun.
