Treble Cone Backcountry Ski and Splitboard Tour
A Treble Cone backcountry tour is an excellent introduction to the skiing and riding opportunities that lie beyond the ski field boundary. A local mountain guide will introduce you to the skills required to safely explore the backcountry and use their experience and local knowledge to find the best terrain and snow. Group tours are scheduled throughout winter and privately on demand. Register interest below and we will be in touch to make arrangements.
What to Expect
Treble Cone backcountry tours can be tailored to the group’s level but more fitness will allow further travel into the backcountry and experience more terrain and endless skiing, or riding.
Small groups and local, experienced guides provide the maximum opportunity to pick up all those tips and tricks for efficient travel, staying safe, and finding the best snow.
If you want to extend your backcountry knowledge, consider combining a day tour with an Avalanche Skills Course or Backcountry Ski and Splitboard Course.
We also run day tours at Cardrona or The Remarkables (transport surcharge applies).
Backcountry Tour Itinerary
Your guide will either pick you up from your accommodation in Wānaka or you can meet at the Treble Cone ski field base building at 8:30. Tours usually return to the base building by around 16:00 and back in town by 17:00.
The Treble Cone ski field lifts provide access to 1900m and acres of backcountry terrain of the Motutapu Conservation area. Untracked snow is available long after the ski field is chopped up.
It is a short hike to the summit of Treble Cone itself and Towers Ridge extends southwards towards Coronet Peak. The area offers a variety of runs and aspects for all levels of ski touring and splitboarding ability.
Fitness and Difficulty Requirements
Tours can be tailored to the group’s ability and fitness. Good fitness is required to get the most out of the day.
This trip is accessible to a wide range of ski and snowboarding abilities from intermediate to expert. Some touring experience is recommended.
Equipment
Avalanche safety gear can be provided. If you need to hire ski touring equipment, we work with MT Outdoors in Three Parks, Wānaka.
Get in touch with us to arrange splitboard hire.
Daily hire rates are $100 – $130.
