Brewster Hut is popular during the summer so space is only available when booked well in advance. Otherwise, it is possible to camp outside the hut, or from a more remote wilderness experience, on sites closer to the glacier.
Up close to the main divide, the Brewster Glacier can be exposed to harsh mountain weather. The Haast river is un-bridged and during heavy rain, it may not be possible to cross. We recommend booking at least 3 days to give you the best opportunity to get some good weather for the trip. The itinerary above is flexible to make the most of the weather available.
'This trip gave us exactly what we were hoping for. We wanted to fully immerse ourselves in nature and discover its diversity. In just a few days, we experienced river, forests, mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, snow, sun, wind, and rain. Each day felt different, and that variety made the journey incredibly rich and memorable. We were also looking for a physical challenge, but not something overwhelming. The balance was perfect. It pushed us enough to feel proud of what we achieved, yet left us with enough energy to pause, enjoy the scenery, and truly take it all in. There were many moments when we felt in awe of the landscapes around us. Standing in front of vast mountains and glaciers made us feel small in the best possible way. It was humbling and powerful at the same time. Finally, sharing the experience in good company made it even more meaningful.'
