Wanaka Mountain Guides - Mount Dixon Climb

New Zealand 3000m Peaks

Mount Dixon Climb

Overview

The Mount Dixon climb is a popular alpine objective. Standing at 3004m, it offers a more approachable technical challenge than many of its steeper neighbours. Situated directly above the Grand Plateau, Mount Dixon serves as a spectacular vantage point, looking across the Hochstetter Icefall toward the towering East Face of Aoraki / Mount Cook.

The standard route is the East Ridge, a classic alpine line that follows an elegant, snow-draped spine to the summit. Accessed easily from Plateau Hut. It is the ideal objective for mountaineers looking to solidify their cramponing and movement skills on a major high-alpine peak before tackling more complex Grade 3 terrain.
South Ridge

South Ridge

For those looking for a more technical challenge, there is the mixed South Ridge. An aesthetic line with a descent down the standard East Ridge. This is a popular progression to more challenging routes and common preparation for attempting Aoraki / Mount Cook.
