Mitre Peak Climb

One of the most recognisable of New Zealand’s peaks, Mitre Peak (1692m) rising out from Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park, is the backdrop for the thousands of daily tourists that cruise the waters below. The climb is a classic summer scramble along a narrow and varied ridge with jaw dropping exposure down to the fiord below. The climb is best enjoyed with a camp or a bivi on the shoulder to enjoy being alone long after the daily cruise tourists have headed away and to make the most of the sunrise over the mountains.

Meeting in Wanaka or Queenstown we drive to Milford Sound via Te Anau and the Milford Highway. The journey through the Darran Mountains is one of the most scenic drives in country and there are numerous viewpoints and short walks to explore.

We helicopter to the bush edge with all our equipment where there are camp spots for around 3 tents. That afternoon we may explore down to the Footstool.

Early the next morning, the route heads steeply above the camp through the tussock and scrub to a horizontal ridge. Before the ridge climbs again, is the Notch which is the technical crux of the route with a down climb and a steep scramble on good rock and steep tussock slopes above.

Another hour or so brings you to the Summit Step. This is climbed initially on the left up a corner before traversing out right to easier ground and the ‘Duck Bill’ rock. From here it is an easy scramble to the table top summit of Mitre Peak and views of the entire length of Milford Sound.

After reversing the route back to the camp we spend another night or helicopter back to sea level. If time and weather allows it then may be possible to do some more rock climbing, scrambling, or trekking in the Darrans or the Remarkables on the way back to Queenstown
