Plateau Hut Experience Heli-hike

Experience the glaciers of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park in the world-heritage Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. Staying overnight in alpine huts gives mountain enthusiasts the opportunity to witness the mountain panoramas throughout the evening light, sunset, and sunrise. These locations will provide amazing star gazing opportunities and maybe even experience the Southern Lights / Aurora Australis. All food and equipment is provided.

Plateau Hut Overnight

2.5 hours drive from Wānaka in the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, Plateau Hut provides a big mountain experience surrounded by NZ’s biggest peaks.

Helicopter direct from Mount Cook Village to the edge of the hut on the edge of the Grand Plateau, a large glacier terrace surrounded by New Zealand’s tallest peaks.

Once established in the hut, explore the surrounding glacier with its crevasses using crampons or snowshoes. You will be roped to your guide for security.

Ascend to the summit of Glacier Dome for views all the way up the Haupapa / Tasman Glacier.

What to Expect

A full range of conditions can be expected in the NZ mountains and participants need to be suitably prepared.

You will need:

Snow boots (available to borrow)
Gloves and a warm hat
Long sleeved tops
A warm and waterproof jacket
Long outdoor pants
Sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
Sleeping bag (available to borrow)
Personal overnight supplies

We provide any required technical equipment such as crampons, ice axes, trekking poles, or snowshoes.

All trips are individually tailored to mountain conditions, fitness, and personal ambition. There are a variety of options and routes available.

No mountaineering experience is required and training in all required skills is provided during the trip.

Optional Extras

Additional optional extras include helicopter transfers from Queenstown or Wānaka accommodation, and additional scenic helicopter flights including Milford Sound and Mt Cook.

The Plateau Hut Overnight trip is booked in small groups in a private basis. Please get in touch to express an interest in private trips.

2025 Price:

$1650 / $2150/ $3030 per person for private groups of 4 / 3 / 2 people

Includes: GST, guide fees, compliance costs, 2 scenic helicopter flights, all food during the trip, overnight, and technical equipment.

Trips start in Wānaka or Mount Cook Village.

Flights in and out from Plateau Hut are very dependent on the weather. If this means that you cannot spend the entire duration of the trip at Plateau Hut, you retain the services of your guide for alternative guided activities in the Mount Cook area, accommodation will be arranged in Mount Cook or Wanaka, and unused flight expenses will be refunded.
